Anthropic opens Bay Area biology lab to target rare diseases with AI

Anthropic has opened a biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area to apply its AI technology to life sciences research, aiming to develop therapies for rare and neglected diseases. The move comes days after its CEO urged the tech industry to slow the pace of frontier AI development. The "wet lab" facility extends Anthropic's work beyond computational screening into physical biological experiments, according to Reuters. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of life sciences, confirmed the lab's daily operations, noting that real-world testing remains essential, with work split between internal facilities and external partners. The initiative targets health conditions overlooked by major pharmaceutical companies, though a company representative clarified the facility is not strictly for drug discovery. CEO Dario Amodei has personal motivation, having lost his father to an illness shortly before a cure became available. Anthropic is also exploring how its Claude models can guide robotic hardware in lab tests.
