Anthropic opens bio research lab in San Francisco Bay Area

Anthropic has established a biology research lab in the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct physical experiments, though it has not disclosed specific projects. The company confirmed the lab's existence via its Head of Life Sciences, Eric Kauderer-Abrams. Kauderer-Abrams stated that real lab work remains essential for biology and that Anthropic is conducting in-house experiments while partnering externally when appropriate. The lab is not exclusively for drug discovery, though Anthropic launched a drug discovery program called Claude Science in June. The company is exploring using its AI model Claude to control robots for scientific experiments, but Kauderer-Abrams emphasized this is in early stages with human oversight required. Anthropic has not run clinical trials and faces public trust challenges, having recently flagged scientists attempting to use its AI for biological weapons.
