ACLU challenges Trump's birthright citizenship order in court

The American Civil Liberties Union filed a court motion Tuesday challenging President Trump's new executive order restricting birthright citizenship, seeking a ruling that the order violates a prior Supreme Court decision declaring such restrictions unconstitutional. The new order denies citizenship to children of foreign government employees, alien enemies, and birth tourists, a narrower scope than Trump's original attempt that the Supreme Court struck down in June. The ACLU is asking U.S. District Judge Joseph Laplante to clarify that the earlier ruling bars any executive action stripping citizenship from class members. The case has not yet returned to Laplante's court, and the ACLU requested expedited processing. The Justice Department said it will vigorously defend the executive orders, asserting the president's authority to protect the integrity of American citizenship.
