York and Scarborough NHS Trust ranks poorly for satisfaction

A hospital trust in North Yorkshire has been ranked as one of the worst workplaces in England. The York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust received low scores in a national survey conducted in autumn 2024. This survey involved around 700,000 employees from 215 NHS trusts across England. Only 45% of the staff at the trust said they would recommend it as a place to work. This made it the lowest-rated trust in the North East and Yorkshire region. The trust's leaders acknowledged that the results do not reflect their goals and pointed to a challenging work environment. Councillor Rich Maw expressed concern for the dedicated staff who continue to care for patients despite their struggles. Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume also called attention to the hard work of hospital staff, noting it was disappointing that their working conditions were not satisfactory. The chief executive of the trust, Simon Morritt, said the survey results highlighted a need for improvement. He pointed out that the response rate was only 36%, meaning many employees did not share their thoughts. Morritt emphasized that changes would not come from increased funding but from a fundamental shift in how they use existing resources. He recognized the need for staff to feel they can influence improvements in their workplace.
