WRD requests ₹20 crore for invasive mussels removal
The Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority and the Water Resources Department are working on cleaning up the Ennore creek. They have removed about 200,000 cubic meters of material, including harmful charru mussels, from a section of the Kosasthalaiyar river over the last four months. This work is a response to orders from the National Green Tribunal. Dredging started on November 30, 2024, and is expected to be finished by the end of May. The operation involves two large dredgers and a team of 40 workers. Local fishermen have expressed concerns about the charru mussels, which harm water bodies and disrupt local wildlife and fishing activities. The Water Resources Department has indicated that Tangedco, the state's power corporation, is responsible for disposing of the dredged materials. They have requested ₹20 crore from Tangedco for their efforts. Additionally, there are plans for more clean-up activities in nearby areas with a budget of ₹20.85 crores. This proposal is awaiting approval. If approved, the WRD will collaborate with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Tangedco to secure the necessary funding. Beyond dredging, pilot studies are being conducted with the help of a local fisheries college. These studies aim to find ways to prevent the return of charru mussels in the cleaned areas. There are also plans to explore using these mussels for new job opportunities for local communities.
