Woolworths defends price increases compared to Coles
Woolworths has responded to a report from Consumer Group Choice, which found that grocery prices rose by 3.7% at its stores from March to December last year. In contrast, prices at Coles dropped by 2.5%. Woolworths argues that the report did not consider its cheaper product options. Many shoppers are feeling the impact of increasing grocery bills. Some customers, like a mother from Brisbane, say prices are higher than before, while others believe it’s a personal choice where to shop. Consumer Group Choice examined common items, including milk and bread, to assess price trends. Experts are divided on the issue, with some urging for government intervention to foster competition. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found no evidence of a supermarket duopoly and suggested that consumers should shop around to find better prices. The report also recommended improving transparency on grocery prices but could not conclude if price gouging was occurring. Some analysts suggest that encouraging new supermarket entrants and supporting smaller grocers could enhance competition in the market. Woolworths claims it is committed to providing value to its customers.
