Wilkes-Barre man arrested after shooting and foot chase
WILKES-BARRE — An 18-year-old man was arrested after fleeing from the police. He is accused of shooting at another man last month, leading to a crash that injured a toddler. Jonyel Henriquez Diaz, from Railroad Street, allegedly fired two shots at Rufino Jimenez, 20, during an argument in a parking lot on February 10. The incident occurred while Jimenez was delivering food. As Jimenez drove away, he crashed into a parked car. This collision pushed the car onto the sidewalk, injuring a father and his 1-year-old son. The father hurt his ankle, and the toddler fell and hit his head. Police say Diaz and Jimenez knew each other from high school. After the shooting, officers sought to arrest Diaz at his home on Friday but he ran away. He discarded a Glock 9mm handgun in a bush, which police later found. Police tracked Diaz through several backyards and arrested him behind a house. The gun was registered to Diaz’s mother. He faces multiple charges, including reckless endangerment and aggravated assault, and is being held in jail on $500,000 bail. Jimenez has also been charged for the crash that led to the injuries.
