Welsh woman's breast lump dismissed as anxiety before cancer diagnosis
A Welsh woman was told by a GP that her breast lump was likely due to "medical anxiety" and that she was "too young" for breast cancer, but she was later diagnosed with the disease. The cancer had spread to three lymph nodes by the time it was found. Beth Jenkins, 42, first noticed a small lump in 2018, but an ultrasound suggested it was glandular tissue. After her daughter kicked her chest in 2024, she found the lump had grown "massive" and visited her GP, who prescribed antibiotics. A second GP later advised an urgent referral, leading to her diagnosis on 14 November 2024. Jenkins, who has no evidence of disease but will be monitored for 15 years, has raised £6,000 for charity through a Breast Fest event. Cancer Research Wales noted about 100-115 cases occur in women under 40 annually in Wales, and guidelines state younger women with lumps should be referred for investigation.
