Walker approves drive-thru deli in Green Ridge Square
The city of Walker has taken a step forward in approving a new drive-thru deli in the Green Ridge Square shopping center. This decision comes despite some concerns about traffic flow, parking, and electrical issues. The drive-thru deli will be a McAlister's Deli located at 3130 Alpine Ave. NW. It will occupy a 3,249-square-foot building that is yet to be constructed near Crunch Fitness. The building will sit in the northwest corner of the parking lot. The out-lot will make up about 30% of the total 3.81-acre property. Commissioners had previously delayed their decision a month ago to address questions regarding the deli's impact on traffic and parking. They were worried that the new building could disrupt the traffic flow between McAlister’s and Crunch Fitness, as it would remove some existing parking spaces. However, the property owner’s representative assured the commission that the parking lot is not fully utilized. The combined parking plan includes 217 spaces, while only 62 are needed for both businesses. McAlister's Deli will also join the shopping center’s shared parking agreement. The operator explained that McAlister's would use a quick pickup window rather than a traditional drive-thru. Customers can order and pay online, which speeds up the process. Only about 35% of McAlister's customers typically use the drive-thru. There were also concerns about a nearby power line. Engineers confirmed that their work would not interfere with it, as all activities would be done away from the line. The approval of the project will depend on meeting all safety regulations and creating barriers to improve traffic flow.
