Wagner High School Jazz Band qualifies for competition
The Susan E. Wagner High School Jazz Band is gearing up for a major competition at Lincoln Center. This talented group has been recognized as one of the top high school jazz bands in the United States for the third year in a row. Under the guidance of Assistant Principal and Band Director Paul Corn, they have won a spot in the 30th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival. The event takes place in May. This year, the competition features 30 bands from around the world, selected from 127 schools. To help the students prepare, renowned saxophonist Alexa Tarantino held a four-hour clinic at the school. She shared her expertise and provided valuable feedback to the young musicians. "This is a life skill of self-discipline," Tarantino said. She encouraged the band to take pride in their hard work and dedication. Students expressed excitement about learning from Tarantino. Senior trumpet player Ryan Villamagna praised her unique teaching style. He mentioned his daily practice routine to get ready for the event. Junior trumpet player Abigail Saladis also acknowledged Tarantino's impactful instruction, calling it exactly what they needed. The competition runs from May 7 to 11 and includes workshops, jam sessions, and rehearsals. The final concert will be at the Metropolitan Opera House on May 11. This event will also be streamed live for those unable to attend. Tickets will be available soon, and more information can be found on the festival's website.
