Victim of violent crime feels betrayed by notification loophole as attacker nears parole decision
Samantha Barlow, a former police officer, feels betrayed after learning her attacker, Roderick Holohan, may be released on parole. She was not informed about his upcoming parole hearing due to a legal loophole, which requires victims to opt into a notification system. Holohan, who severely injured Barlow in 2009, has a history of violent offenses. The Serious Offenders Review Council recommended his release, which will be decided by the State Parole Authority. The Barlows were given only days to submit their concerns. Barlow criticized the victim notification process, stating it places an unfair burden on victims to navigate legal complexities. She believes victims of serious crimes should automatically be included in the notification system.
