Verizon secures approval for new cell tower in South Abington Township

A cellphone tower has been approved in South Abington Township. The Zoning Hearing Board granted a variance for Verizon Wireless to build a 132-foot monopole at the Country Club of Scranton, near West Grove Street and Elkview Drive. The tower will be surrounded by an 8-foot fence and trees. It will feature a 128-foot pole with a 4-foot antenna, along with underground utilities. Residents raised concerns about safety, which the developer addressed with expert testimony. Previously, Verizon proposed a taller tower near Hillside Park in 2022, but those plans were suspended due to property restrictions. The new tower is located away from schools and residential areas.
