Uttar Pradesh sees 1.89 lakh enrollments for DElEd
In Uttar Pradesh, the demand for the Diploma in Elementary Education (DElEd) remains strong. Recent data shows that 1.89 lakh candidates have enrolled for the course for the 2024 session. This admission process ended on March 12. Despite no teacher recruitment in government-run primary schools over the past seven years, many still aspire to the DElEd program. Anil Bhushan Chaturvedi, the secretary of the Exam Regulatory Authority, confirmed the enrollment numbers. The DElEd program is critical for those wishing to teach in primary and upper primary schools. This year, the initial application count was 3,25,440 candidates. The admissions took place in District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and private colleges until February 18. There were additional admissions for minority institutions from March 2 to 12. However, over 50,000 seats remain unfilled out of a total of 2,39,500. Last year saw slightly higher enrollment with 1,92,759 candidates. The process this year also opened doors for candidates from other states, who were placed in the unreserved category. Experts point out that the interest in DElEd increased after a Supreme Court ruling. The court decided that only candidates with a DElEd qualification can apply for teaching positions, not those with a BEd degree. This led to many colleges renewing their commitment to offering the DElEd program. Trainees are hopeful that future job opportunities will arise in government primary schools.
