USPS plans to reduce workforce by 10,000 jobs
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) plans to cut 10,000 jobs through a voluntary early retirement program in the next 30 days. This decision aims to reduce costs amid ongoing financial struggles. USPS currently employs about 635,000 workers. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced that the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will assist USPS in finding further efficiencies. DeJoy criticized the Postal Regulatory Commission, calling it unnecessary, which the commission disputed. DeJoy is expected to step down from his position, with no successor nominated yet. The USPS reported a nearly $10 billion loss for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2024.
