US threatens tariffs if trade deals fail
The United States has threatened to reinstate original tariff levels if trade agreements are not reached with its partners. This warning was issued by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Bessent stated that the U.S. negotiating strategy involves "strategic uncertainty." He emphasized that the U.S. is focused on reaching agreements with 18 key trading partners, including the UK and China, which have already seen tariff adjustments. This threat follows a 90-day pause on tariffs announced in April, after initial reciprocal tariffs were imposed. Bessent expressed confidence that these negotiations will ultimately benefit retailers, Americans, and American workers.
