US tanker aircraft leave Bulgaria after Iran tensions

Two US tanker aircraft have left Bulgaria's Bezmer air base, nearly a month after their deployment angered Iran, Bulgaria's defense minister said Saturday. The two US Air Force KC-135 planes departed Friday, Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov told reporters. Their deployment, approved by Bulgaria's parliament on July 22, prompted protests from nearby residents fearing Iranian missile and drone attacks. The US has been at war with Iran since February 28 and requested the temporary deployment under a military facility agreement. Iran accused Bulgaria of complicity in "aggression and war crimes," which Sofia dismissed. Stoyanov said all flights were training missions over allied countries.
