US introduces new regulations on AI chip exports to control global access
The U.S. government announced new regulations on Monday to control the export of advanced artificial intelligence chips, specifically graphics processing units (GPUs). These chips are crucial for training sophisticated AI models, like OpenAI's ChatGPT. The new rules limit countries to a total processing performance of 790 million TPP through 2027, equivalent to about 50,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. This aims to restrict access to powerful AI technology globally. However, companies with special authorizations, like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure, are exempt from these caps. They can access a larger number of advanced GPUs, allowing them to continue developing AI applications without the same restrictions.
