US FDA approves GSK's Hepsavigo injection for chronic hepatitis B patients
The US FDA has approved GSK's injection Hepsavigo (bepirovirsen) for chronic hepatitis B patients without cirrhosis, offering an alternative to antiviral drugs. The treatment targets genetic components that enable viral replication and protein production, allowing virus control without continuous medication. Patients receive injections for up to 24 weeks alongside existing antiviral therapy, followed by continued antiviral treatment for at least 24 more weeks. Possible side effects include liver reactions and decreased platelet counts, requiring regular blood tests. Chronic hepatitis B is a long-term liver infection; in 2019, hepatitis caused 1.1 million deaths worldwide, with 83 percent from hepatitis B.
