U.S. drops Google AI sale requirement in antitrust case
The U.S. Department of Justice has dropped its proposal to force Google to sell its AI investments, including a stake in Anthropic. However, it still seeks a court order for Google to sell its Chrome browser to address its illegal search monopoly. The DOJ's decision follows evidence suggesting that banning Google from AI investments could have unintended consequences. They now propose that Google must notify the government about future generative AI investments. A trial on these proposals is set for April. Other tech companies, including Apple and Amazon, also face antitrust allegations. Many of the original measures proposed by the DOJ remain, with some adjustments.
