UP Cebu launches sustainable materials innovation lab
CEBU CITY, Philippines — The University of the Philippines Cebu has opened a new facility called the Materials Innovation & Exploration Lab (MATiX UP Cebu). This lab aims to enhance research on sustainable materials, promote collaboration with industries, and support education focused on innovation. The launch took place on March 21, with funding from the Department of Trade and Industry's Tatak Pinoy program. MATiX UP Cebu aims to be a leading center for sustainable materials research in the Philippines. The lab intends to support local communities, industries, and educational institutions by creating solutions that emphasize environmental care and economic stability. UP Cebu Chancellor Lawyer Leo Malagar mentioned that the lab symbolizes new possibilities and innovation. He emphasized its role in fostering creativity and teamwork. Assistant Regional Director Esperanza Melgar from DTI Region 7 highlighted the importance of MATiX UP Cebu in enhancing the country's industrial competitiveness. The DTI provided P1.7 million in funding to support the lab and its initiatives. MATiX UP Cebu will also help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) find affordable and sustainable materials. The facility will include a New Materials Library, which will serve as a resource for researchers, entrepreneurs, and designers interested in sustainable materials for various industries like furniture and fashion. MATiX UP Cebu builds upon the existing FabLab UP Cebu, established in 2016. While FabLab focuses on digital manufacturing, MATiX will concentrate on developing new, locally sourced materials. The goal is to transform research into practical applications that benefit academia, local artisans, and industries seeking eco-friendly solutions. The opening event attracted many stakeholders, including representatives from UP Cebu, DTI, and local government leaders. Malagar stated that MATiX is a space for courage and curiosity, inviting collaboration to create a sustainable future together.
