University student faces harassment from 200 men
A University of Limerick student, Ella Deasy, reported harassment by over 200 young men in a WhatsApp group. She faced bullying, including disruptive shouting and doorbell ringing at night. When she initially informed her accommodation provider, no action was taken. The incidents have sparked concern among politicians. Sinn Féin TD Mairead Farrell described the situation as “deeply concerning” and emphasized the fear young women experience daily. Other politicians echoed these worries, highlighting the urgent need to address harassment against female students. Higher Education Minister James Lawless stressed that colleges must act decisively when harassment is reported. He called for universities to ensure a safe environment for all students. Lawless is visiting institutions to discuss how to better protect student welfare.
