UNICEF: 20 Million Children Face Online Sexual Abuse Yearly, Few Report It

An estimated 20 million children aged 12 to 17 experienced online sexual exploitation or abuse in a single year, according to UNICEF, representing nearly one in five minors across 21 surveyed nations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. The data shows over 15 million children received unsolicited explicit material, about 9 million were pressured into sexual interactions, and 4 million had private images shared without consent. Nearly 60 percent of incidents occurred on major social media platforms, with 57 percent of cases involving known individuals. More than 40 percent of victims never disclosed their experiences, and fewer than 1 percent reported incidents to authorities. Affected children are four times more likely to experience suicidal thoughts. India faces similar challenges due to rapid smartphone proliferation, prompting stronger cybercrime enforcement and calls for stricter platform regulations.
