UN reports death toll rises to at least 900 in Goma fighting
The U.N. health agency reports that fighting in Goma, eastern Congo, has resulted in at least 900 deaths, an increase from the previous toll of 773. The violence involved Congolese government forces and Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. The World Health Organization noted nearly 2,900 injuries during the five days of conflict. The M23 rebels have gained control of Goma, supported by around 4,000 Rwandan troops, a significant increase from their earlier presence in 2012. Goma is a key city in Congo's mineral-rich east, which is home to valuable resources essential for global technology. The situation remains tense as various armed groups compete for control in the region.
