UN estimates up to 1,400 killed in Bangladesh protests crackdown
The U.N. human rights office reports that up to 1,400 people may have been killed in Bangladesh during a crackdown on student-led protests last summer. The protests were against the former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, who has since fled to India. The report indicates that security forces systematically violated human rights, potentially committing crimes against humanity. Thousands were injured, with most shot by security personnel during the protests from July 1 to August 15. A U.N. fact-finding team was invited to investigate by interim leader Muhammad Yunus. The protests began over a government job quota system and escalated into a significant uprising against Hasina's government.
