UN chief calls for dialogue as M23 rebels advance on Bukavu in Congo
U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres has called for dialogue in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as M23 rebels advance towards Bukavu. The rebels recently captured Goma, escalating violence in the region. Regional leaders are urging direct talks, but Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi has refused to engage with the M23 and missed the African Union summit. He sent his prime minister in his place. The African Union's Peace and Security Council held a closed meeting to address the crisis. Rwanda's President Paul Kagame denied any involvement with the M23, stating on social media that Rwanda is not connected to Congo's issues.
