UN agency reports 350,000 displaced in eastern Congo fighting

The U.N. refugee agency reports that fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has left around 350,000 people without shelter. Many temporary camps have been destroyed, forcing displaced individuals to seek refuge in makeshift accommodations like churches and hospitals. The situation worsened after Rwandan-backed M23 rebels captured Goma last month and continued their advance. About 70% of Goma's camps are now destroyed, and the risk of disease and crime is increasing as aid efforts struggle amid ongoing violence. Recent attacks by the CODECO militia have resulted in over 80 civilian deaths. The conflict has led to at least 3,000 fatalities and significant displacement, with accusations against Rwanda for supporting M23, which Kigali denies.
