UK warns Putin of consequences for breaching Ukraine peace
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin about "severe consequences" if he breaks a peace agreement with Ukraine. This warning came after Starmer met with military officials from 31 countries at Northwood military base near London. They discussed future plans to protect Ukraine and deter Russian aggression. Starmer emphasized that Ukraine has the right to defend itself and that Russia cannot dictate its military strategy. Putin has demanded that Ukraine demilitarize as part of any peace deal. However, Starmer clarified that allied forces will support Ukrainian troops, rather than replace them on the ground. He mentioned that Ukrainian forces have become one of the strongest in Europe, with capability, numbers, and real combat experience. The support from Western forces would be in the form of air, sea, and land resources to enhance Ukraine's defense, not to take over their military role. Discussions included officials from various countries, including the US and Italy. While some leaders have expressed doubts about the proposed plans, Starmer remains firm that Ukraine needs to maintain its sovereignty and security. Negotiations between the US, Ukraine, and Russia are ongoing, with a possible ceasefire being discussed. Starmer stated that it is essential for Ukraine to have its own defense capabilities and not allow Putin to dictate terms. He criticized Putin’s push for a weaker Ukraine, referencing similar demands made in the past that were ignored, leading to conflict. The strategic planning aims to ensure a strong defense posture for Ukraine in light of these ongoing tensions.
