A Mexican couple was detained while heading to a hospital for their daughter’s cancer treatment. They were deported, separating them from their five U.S. citizen children. The mother shared that they had to choose between living apart from their kids or being deported together. In the first 50 days of Trump's administration, over 32,000 migrants were detained, with reports saying that many were not criminals. More than 200 were recently sent to El Salvador, many accused of being part of a gang. However, others, like Caraballo, have no criminal records and were deported based on their tattoos, which the authorities interpreted as evidence of gang affiliation. Camila Munoz, a Peruvian woman, was stopped in Puerto Rico while returning from her honeymoon. Despite having begun the process to obtain legal residency, she is currently held in Louisiana. Her husband, who supported Trump, expressed shock and disappointment over the situation. Immigration lawyer David Rozas described the current deportation crackdown as the most alarming of his career. He believes that migrants contribute significantly to the economy and that the ongoing deportations could lead to a labor shortage. Shirly Guardado’s husband, who serves in the U.S. Army, also defended her, emphasizing that she has always followed the law. Guardado had been working towards obtaining legal residency after living in the U.S. for a decade. Her husband is left to care for their infant son, who is struggling without his mother. He worries it could take years to bring her back.
