Trump signs order for reciprocal tariffs targeting India
President Trump has signed an order to implement reciprocal tariffs aimed at countries with high trade barriers, particularly India. These tariffs, expected by April, could increase duties on Indian goods and heighten trade tensions. Currently, India's average tariff on U.S. goods is significantly higher than the U.S. tariff on Indian products. The U.S. charges an average of 5% on agricultural goods, while India charges 39%. This disparity includes a 100% tariff on U.S. motorcycles. Despite these tensions, both countries have taken steps to improve trade relations. India has lowered tariffs on certain U.S. products, and both nations have pledged to enhance bilateral trade in various sectors, including agriculture and manufactured goods.
