Trucker protests over fuel costs spread across southern Italy, disrupting traffic from Calabria to Sicily
Truck driver protests against high fuel prices began in southern Italy, causing traffic disruptions through roadside demonstrations rather than full blockades. The protests, organized by logistics federation Fedralog, are scheduled to continue until the 20th. In Calabria, about fifteen protest sites were set up, including near Lamezia Terme airport and the port of Gioia Tauro, with police monitoring the narrowed roadways. In Basilicata, fuel shortages were reported at most gas stations due to a refinery strike, while Campania saw temporary highway exit closures near Nola and Caianello. In Sicily, truckers blocked a port entrance in Palermo and staged actions in Gela. The protests add to ongoing farmer demonstrations against fuel costs, with some student participation reported in Corigliano Rossano. Truckers cite annual cost increases of 8,000 euros per vehicle and diesel prices exceeding 2.16 euros per liter.
