Tribune political columnist Thomas Hardy has died
Thomas Hardy, a prominent political columnist and reporter for the Tribune, has passed away at age 72. He died on March 27 after a short illness. Hardy was known for his insightful political commentary and worked for Gov. Jim Edgar and the University of Illinois. Hardy began his journalism career at the Tribune in 1977. Over the years, he built a reputation as a fair-minded political journalist, covering significant political events, including three presidential campaigns. He was also known for his critical columns that examined the behavior of local politicians. After leaving the Tribune in 1997, Hardy served as press secretary for Gov. Edgar. He later held a role at the University of Illinois, where he was highly respected for his public affairs work. Hardy retired in 2020 and was remembered fondly by colleagues for his wisdom and good advice. In addition to his professional life, Hardy enjoyed sports like soccer, golf, and skiing. He is survived by his fiancée, two sons, two sisters, two brothers, and two granddaughters. A visitation will be held on April 1, followed by a funeral on April 2.
