A Toronto resident, Anton Trofimov, has been arrested and charged with violating Canadian sanctions against Russia related to the war in Ukraine. He is accused of exporting drone parts to Russia. Trofimov, 43, is the director of a Hong Kong-based company previously sanctioned by the U.S. and U.K. He faces charges of exporting regulated goods and goods that could be used for weapons, as well as possession of criminally obtained property. The charges stem from events between July and December 2022. The arrest marks a rare instance of charges under Canada's Russia sanctions. The Ukrainian Canadian Congress has urged the government to strengthen enforcement. The RCMP aims to provide more details in a press conference soon.
