Timor Leste's ASEAN bid may suffer from extradition refusal
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine government warns that Timor Leste may face difficulties in its bid to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) if it refuses to extradite former Representative Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla expressed concerns about this situation. Teves, who has been expelled from his position, has appealed to a court in Timor Leste to block the Philippine request for his extradition. Remulla stated that the Department of Foreign Affairs is currently engaged in discussions with Timor Leste regarding this issue. Remulla emphasized that this situation could complicate Timor Leste’s application for ASEAN membership. He mentioned that the Philippines, being a founding member, has a significant role in the decision-making process. All existing ASEAN members must agree unanimously to accept a new member. Teves faces serious criminal charges in the Philippines, including multiple counts of murder and attempted murder connected to a high-profile killing incident in 2023. Remulla reiterated that Teves is an undocumented Filipino accused of serious crimes and should be returned to the Philippines.
