Thousands of EPA scientists face dismissal under Trump plan
The Trump administration plans to cut thousands of jobs at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This includes major reductions in its scientific research division. The move is part of President Trump’s strategy to lower federal employment and environmental protections. The scientific research division currently employs more than 1,500 people. Most of these employees may not be kept, according to documents reviewed by Democratic lawmakers. The remaining jobs would be shifted to other parts of the agency. Although these layoffs are proposed, they have not yet been finalized. In February, President Trump mentioned that EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin aims to reduce about 65% of the agency's 17,000 employees. EPA spokesperson Molly Vaseli said the agency is making improvements to better serve Americans. She emphasized a commitment to protect clean air and water. Vaseli stated that the agency is seeking employee input to increase efficiency. Democratic legislators have criticized the plan. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren argued that cutting scientific staff would harm the EPA's ability to fulfill its mission to protect public health and the environment. The Union of Concerned Scientists emphasized the importance of the EPA's scientists in managing pollution and public safety. They warned that without these experts, industry self-regulation may not be effective.
