Texas AG investigates Dallas for noncompliance with immigration laws
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is investigating Dallas for allegedly not following state and federal immigration laws. He cited comments from Dallas Interim Police Chief Michael T. Igo, who stated the police department does not assist federal agencies with detaining individuals. Paxton's office has requested Dallas's policies and training materials related to immigration enforcement. This investigation follows a 2017 state law that prohibits local policies preventing police from inquiring about immigration status. During the current legislative session, lawmakers are proposing bills to require local police to work with federal immigration authorities. Governor Greg Abbott supports these measures, which aim to strengthen immigration enforcement in Texas.
