Tesco offers free food items to reduce waste
Tesco has started a trial to give away some food items for free at selected stores. Items that are close to their expiration date are marked with yellow stickers. This initiative aims to reduce food waste. Many supermarkets offer discounts on groceries as they approach their sell-by dates. Here are some tips for finding free or discounted items. Timing is important. At Tesco Express, yellow stickers usually appear after 9:30 PM. Other supermarkets, like Asda and Sainsbury’s, lower prices on perishable goods in the late afternoon or evening, around 5 PM to 7 PM. The Co-op often marks down items about four hours before closing. Talking to store employees can be helpful. If you see an item nearing expiration, ask if it will be discounted or given away. Staff members might offer you a discount right away. Shopping with a friend or family member can increase your chances of finding bargains. Divide and check different aisles for discounted products, focusing on the meat, dairy, and vegetable sections. Once you find a discount or free item, inspect it carefully. Avoid products with broken seals, bulging packages, or discolored meat, as these may indicate spoilage. If you’re unsure about what to grab, consider items like milk that is close to expiration, which can be used for making butter or pancakes. Cheese can also be frozen for later use.
