Tech group calls on US to delay AI chip export rule to protect competitiveness
A technology industry group is urging the Biden administration to delay a new rule that would limit global access to AI chips. The Information Technology Industry Council, which includes major companies like Amazon and Microsoft, argues the rule could harm U.S. competitiveness. The proposed rule aims to control AI chip exports to prevent access by adversaries, particularly China. The ITI Council expressed concerns about the timing, as the rule may be finalized before President Biden leaves office on January 20. In a letter to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, the ITI CEO emphasized the need for careful consideration of the rule's implications for U.S. leadership in AI. The group requests that any controls be introduced as proposed rule-making instead.
