Tamil Nadu's HR&CE department celebrates 100 years of managing temples and revenues

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department of Tamil Nadu marks its 100th anniversary this year. Established in 1923, it oversees state-run temples and manages their revenues, which are included in the state's income. The HR&CE Department has faced legal challenges regarding its land use plans and the management of smaller temples. However, it has improved administrative oversight for larger shrines since its inception. Originally formed as the Hindu Religious Endowments Board, the HR&CE Department replaced it in 1951. The department's current building in Nungambakkam was completed in 1959 and has historical significance linked to its previous ownership.
