Taiwan to buy LNG from Alaska pipeline project
Taiwan plans to purchase 6 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually from a proposed Alaska pipeline project, with potential investment of up to $4.4 billion, its Economic Affairs Ministry said Wednesday, a deal U.S. President Donald Trump called "one of the biggest deals ever made." State-owned CPC Corporation signed a letter of intent in March 2025 and has made significant progress after over a year of negotiations. The ministry said the project could start supporting Taiwan's natural gas supply by 2032 at the earliest, with the cooperation aimed at diversifying supply and deepening Taiwan-U.S. ties. The announcement came as Taiwan awaits a stalled $14 billion U.S. arms sales package, which Trump has called a "very good negotiating chip" with China. Beijing's foreign ministry said Taiwan's ruling party's attempts to pursue independence under the guise of economic cooperation would not succeed.
