Taiwan to buy Alaskan LNG in up to $4.4 billion deal

independent.co.uk —

Taiwan plans to purchase 6 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas annually from a proposed Alaska pipeline project and may invest up to $4.4 billion in it, its economic affairs ministry said Wednesday, a deal U.S. President Donald Trump called "one of the biggest deals ever made." State-owned CPC Corporation signed a letter of intent in March 2025 on the project and has made significant progress after over a year of negotiations, the ministry said. The gas supply could begin as early as 2032, with the cooperation aimed at diversifying Taiwan's energy sources and deepening Taiwan-U.S. ties. Trump said at an Alaska rally that Taiwan agreed to buy 30% of the pipeline's gas for 20 years, though Taiwan's statement did not specify a duration. The deal comes as Taiwan awaits a $14 billion U.S. arms package, which Trump has called a "very good negotiating chip" with China.
