Syria's leader promises justice for civilian massacre
Syria's new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has promised to punish those responsible for the recent massacre of hundreds of Alawite civilians by his forces. This violence followed an ambush by insurgents loyal to ousted president Bashar al-Assad. The clashes resulted in over 1,000 deaths, including many civilians. Sharaa's regime, which took power in December, is forming an independent committee to investigate the violence and hold accountable those involved in the bloodshed. The UN and US have called for an immediate end to the violence and urged Sharaa to ensure accountability for the killings. Meanwhile, neighboring countries' foreign ministers are advocating for the lifting of sanctions on Syria in light of the recent events.
