Syria faces ongoing violence and rising civilian casualties
Syria's interim president, Ahmed al-Shara, called for unity amid ongoing violence between government forces and loyalists of ousted leader Bashar al-Assad. Over 1,000 people have died, including around 700 civilians, according to reports. New fighting has been reported in Latakia and Tartus Provinces. Al-Shara announced the formation of a fact-finding committee to investigate the violence, but it remains unclear if he is acknowledging government responsibility. The clashes began last Thursday and are the worst since Assad's ousting in December. Thousands have protested against the new government, prompting security forces to impose curfews.
