Syria ends military operation after mass civilian killings
Syria's new authorities declared an end to a military operation against loyalists of former president Bashar al-Assad on March 10. This follows nearly 1,000 civilian deaths, primarily among the Alawite minority, in the worst violence since Assad's overthrow. The operation targeted security threats in Latakia and Tartus provinces. Interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa stated the country would not descend into civil war again and promised accountability for those responsible for civilian bloodshed. Despite the announcement, residents remain fearful, with reports of ongoing violence and a lack of basic supplies. An independent committee has been formed to investigate the civilian killings and hold those responsible accountable.
