Supreme Court clarifies Delhi judge transfer unrelated to fire

On March 21, 2025, the Rajya Sabha saw a debate concerning the transfer of a judge from the Delhi High Court. This followed concerns about a fire incident at the judge's residence, during which fire brigade personnel reportedly found a large amount of cash. Congress chief whip Jairam Ramesh brought attention to a news report about the cash discovery. In response, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized the need for judicial accountability in Indian courts. He referred to the National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill (NJAC), suggesting that if past issues had been addressed, incidents like this might not occur. Ramesh also highlighted the ongoing issue of accountability by mentioning a notice submitted by 50 parliament members to remove another judge from the Allahabad High Court for inappropriate comments. Dhankhar confirmed he is reviewing this matter and is communicating with the members involved to verify their signatures. Concerning the Delhi judge, Dhankhar stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the judicial system. He indicated he will seek a discussion on these issues with leaders from both sides of the House. Meanwhile, Congress MP Manish Tewari stated that the Supreme Court collegium is aware of the situation and will decide how to proceed.
