Study shows automatic emergency braking technology significantly improves in new vehicles

theverge.com

A recent AAA study shows that automatic emergency braking (AEB) technology is improving. Newer vehicles, tested against older models, demonstrated a significant increase in effectiveness, with 100% of 2024 vehicles braking before a collision, compared to 51% of 2017-2018 models. The study involved testing three vehicle models at various speeds on a closed course. While newer AEB systems excelled in preventing forward collisions, past studies indicate limitations in preventing other crash types, such as T-bone collisions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has mandated that all light-duty vehicles must have advanced AEB systems by 2029. However, major automakers have expressed concerns about the feasibility of meeting this requirement with current technology.
