Study links excessive childcare hours to lower English and math scores in Singaporean preschoolers
A recent study in Singapore found that children aged three to six who spend over 40 hours a week in childcare have lower scores in English and math. The average childcare time for Singaporean children is 41 hours, with many exceeding 50 hours weekly. The study, based on 2,330 children, showed that while shorter hours can improve academic performance, longer hours lead to lower test scores. However, children in childcare for more than 40 hours exhibited better behavior, possibly due to stronger relationships with caregivers. Experts suggest that flexible work arrangements for parents could reduce childcare hours. The Early Childhood Development Agency is working to enhance the quality of childcare, focusing on social-emotional development and engaging activities for children.
