Study links endometriosis to higher risk of premature death and cancer in women
A new study has found that endometriosis can have long-term health effects on women, even after menopause. About 1 in 10 women in the UK suffer from this condition, which can cause severe symptoms and often takes years to diagnose. The research, involving over 110,000 women, indicates that endometriosis and uterine fibroids may increase the risk of premature death, particularly from gynecological cancers. While fibroids did not show a link to higher death rates, endometriosis was associated with increased mortality from both cancer and non-cancer causes. Published in the BMJ, the study highlights the need for healthcare providers to consider these conditions when assessing women's health. Over 4,000 premature deaths were recorded in the study, with cancer being a leading cause.
