Study links common infections to increased dementia risk through brain volume loss
New research indicates that common infections, such as the flu and herpes, may increase the risk of dementia by causing brain volume loss. The study analyzed data from nearly 1,000 participants and found links between six infections and cognitive decline. The study, published in *Nature Aging*, showed that infections like influenza and herpes specifically affected brain areas important for memory. Changes in immune-related proteins were also noted, suggesting a connection between infections and neurodegeneration. Experts recommend staying up-to-date on vaccinations to help prevent severe infections, which may lower the long-term risk of dementia. Vaccines can reduce the impact of infections on brain health.
