Stop GLP-1 RAs two weeks before joint surgery

medicalxpress.com

A study presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons meeting suggests stopping glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) treatment, like Ozempic, 14 days before total joint surgery can reduce complications. Researchers found that stopping Ozempic closer to surgery increased risks for issues such as delayed emergence from anesthesia and aspiration pneumonitis. Patients who continued the medication had the highest complication rates. The study indicates that ceasing GLP-1 RA treatment two weeks prior to surgery is optimal for minimizing these risks.
