Startups explore deep sea desalination to tackle water scarcity challenges
A new approach to desalination, called deep sea reverse osmosis (DSRO), is gaining attention from startups. This method uses natural ocean pressure at depths of 1,300 to 2,000 feet to reduce energy needs compared to traditional onshore desalination. Recent advancements in seabed electrification and robotics have made it easier to deploy and maintain DSRO technology. Companies like Flocean and OceanWell are now able to operate more efficiently, using electric pumps instead of hydraulic systems. Investors are showing interest, with OceanWell raising $11 million and Flocean securing $9 million in funding. These startups aim to provide water solutions in regions facing water scarcity, targeting areas like the Mediterranean and California.
